YOU THE PEOPLE STUDENT ACTION GROUP SAMPLE RESULTS
Average
Americans are brighter than even they themselves may realize.
In a
recent workshop, some 50 eleventh and twelfth grade students
were broken down into eight groups of 6-7 students each.
They were given the problem of what broad policy guidelines
the USA should follow over the next few years regarding
China. The answers are as follows:
—Buy
American
—Train
American workers to be better at their jobs
—Rebuild
our economy and manufacturing base
—Improve
our educational system to improve our economy
—Retrain
American workers for high-tech jobs
—Establish
good and continuing relations with China
—Maintain
a strong defense posture just in case
Another
group was asked about possible USA policies regarding AIDS.
Their responses were:
—AIDS
Testing
—More
testing (free, government sponsored)
—Mandatory
testing of all or a representative sample
—Voluntary
self-testing
—Mandatory
self-testing with criminal penalties for infecting others
—More
education (target a broader and younger segment of the
populace)
—More
funding to find a technical breakthrough to cure the disease
None
of these groups were pre-briefed or coached in any way.
