STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

"STUDENTS WANTED FOR A VALUES BASED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
BASED ON OUR CONSTITUTION"

7. A SAMPLE LESSON PLAN: "BECOMING AN AMERICAN CITIZEN"

This is a good example of how to integrate the You the PEOPLE materials into an ordinary lecture-exercise type curricula. Like most of the Lesson Plans this can be cut down to a short lecture (5-7 minutes) on the Core Competencies. Remember, you inspire, they perspire:

1. As a You the PEOPLE exercise, assign the students a homework project in the previous class. For this project assign your students to research their family trees and find at least one person that exemplifies the "American Experience." In a future class break up into your You the PEOPLE groups and share these experiences and then discussthe following questions (25 minutes):

1. Is there a common "American Experience"?
2. If so how would you define it?
3. Where do you think you would be if this ancestor had not done what they did?
4. What do you think you would be doing if your ancestors never came to the USA?
5. Should new immigrants be eligible for entitlement benefits?

Then wrap up the session with each group reporting on their answers to the questions and a short lecture to cover any teaching points that were not reinforced by the discussion (7-10 minutes). You will find that most of the core competencies will have been reinforced in the group discussions. In this case the only one likely to need reinforcing is"Losing U. S. Citizenship". This is how student based programs like You the PEOPLE cover all the teaching points in the same amount of time while increasing student interest and retention markedly.

2. As an alternative exercise have a recent immigrant come and talk to the class about their experience (20 Minutes and 10 minutes Q&A). Have them tell the class why they came to the USA, how it differs from their country, and how they plan to become a citizen (if they plan to become one). These answers will cover most of the teaching points. With the time left cover those competencies not covered and ask the questions in exercise 1 for an all class discussion (20 minutes).

NOTE: Even when you have an all class discussion the Citizenship Skills rules of the You the PEOPLE program must be used and enforced.
