STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The You The People Educational Series is based upon 7 Citizenship Skills or interpersonal values derived from the United States Constitution.The 7 Citizenship skills are:

In brief, students meet in small seminar type groups and deal with public issues in a learned civil interaction based on the principals contained in the United States Constitution. They deal with issues based on their knowledge and beliefs after their research on the different sides of an issue. Activities can involve actual action on the the political system in their community. Students will become media and politically savvy while applying the fair play principals of democracy.

The You The People Student Program:

1. Is experiential
2. Is student based
3. Uses a small group process as its teaching vehicle
4. Uses the non-directive (seminar type) teaching method
5. Is hands-on, multi-level, and interedisciplinary
6. Teaches interpersonal skills
7. Teaches conflict prevention as a way of life
8. Reinforces learning at all levels
9. Is simple, powerful and fun
10. Is a working laboratory that is designed to train young people to participate fully in the democratic process

And:

1. Is designed to teach students that they have a critical role to exercise in the world's most radical political experiment, the USA
2. Trains students to do this respectfully, rationally, and responsibly
3. Is modeled on the U.S. Constitution with checks and balances, self-rule and freedom of choice built-in
4. Can be used from the seventh grade on up by changing the issues discussed
5. Works wonderfully in the block schedule system.
